Counseling Corner | Elaine Awoyinka, LCSW Offers Tips For Reducing Holiday Stress In Children

This video segment is from Restoring Hope, a TV series hosted on WHMB40 and serving the Indianapolis area. Crosswinds Counseling offers counseling services throughout Indiana.

Elaine Awoyinka, Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Crosswinds Counseling, gives practical advice to reduce holiday stress in children.

  1. Stick to their schedule as much as possible. Kids thrive on routine. It’s maybe even good to rehearse the plan for the day or even the week.
  2. Schedule time for outside activities. Age-appropriate activities for the child help boost their mood and reset their spirit.
  3. Avoid over-scheduling. I know it’s tempting to say ‘yes’ to all the invitations that are offered, but it can also be overwhelming for the child.
  4. Schedule peace and quiet. This is a good opportunity for the child to rest and reset before the next activity.
  5. Monitor their sugar intake and be aware of the changes in their regular diet. Keep a regular meal routine as much as possible. Also, when you run errands or go shopping pack some healthy snacks so they’re not eating sweet treats on a regular basis.
  6. Setting an example helps reduce anxiety in children. Monitor your stress and anxiety during this time.

Hopefully, these tips are helpful.
